Study smarter with AI: use it as a tutor, never to cheat

AI can be your best tutor or a shortcut that leaves you empty in the exam hall. Prompts and rules for students to learn faster, honestly.

AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini can explain any topic, any time, as many times as you need. Used well, that's a superpower. Used badly, it's a way to submit work you don't understand and walk into exams empty-handed.

Here's how to use AI as a tutor.

The golden rule

If you couldn't explain it without the AI, you haven't learned it yet.

Always follow your college's rules on AI use, and never submit AI-written work as your own.

6 tutor prompts that work

Copy these and change the topic:

Explain [topic] like I'm a 1st-year student. Use one everyday example from India. Then ask me 3 questions to check I understood.
I think [your explanation]. Is that correct? Don't give me the answer, point to where my thinking is wrong.
Quiz me on [chapter]. One question at a time. Wait for my answer, then tell me what I got right and wrong.
Here is my solution to this problem: [paste]. Find the mistakes but don't rewrite it. Give me hints.
Make a 7-day revision plan for [subject] with 1 hour a day. Day 7 should be a full mock test.
I don't understand this paragraph from my textbook: [paste]. Explain it in simpler words, then in Telugu.

What AI is great at

  • Explaining a concept in five different ways until one clicks
  • Creating practice questions and checking your answers
  • Breaking a big assignment into small steps
  • Explaining code line by line
  • Translating hard English into simpler English or your mother tongue

What to be careful with

  • Facts and numbers. AI can be confidently wrong. Check important facts in your textbook or an official source.
  • Citations. AI sometimes invents references. Never cite a source you haven't opened.
  • Your own voice. Write your first draft yourself. Then ask AI for feedback, not for a rewrite.
  • Privacy. Don't paste personal details, passwords or other people's private information.

A simple daily routine

  1. 20 minutes: read the topic from your textbook or notes.
  2. 20 minutes: ask AI to explain the hard parts and quiz you.
  3. 20 minutes: solve problems yourself; use AI only for hints.

One honest hour a day adds up fast.

Use it to build, too

Once you're comfortable learning with AI, use it to build things: your personal website, a website for a family business, or your final-year project. Building is the best way to remember what you learn.
