Why every student needs a personal website (and how to make one free)
Marks get you shortlisted; proof gets you hired. Build a free student portfolio website with AI in one evening: what to include and how to publish.
Hundreds of students apply for the same internship with the same degree and similar marks. What makes one of them stand out? Proof. A personal website is the simplest way to show proof of what you can do.
Why it matters
- Your name, your address.
yourname.inor a free link puts your work in one place that you control, not buried in a social feed. - Recruiters click links. A resume says "knows HTML, Python". A website shows the thing you built with them.
- It's a project in itself. Building and publishing your own site teaches you more than a certificate course.
- It compounds. Every project you add makes the next application easier.
What to put on it
Keep it to one page at first:
- Hero: your name and one line about what you build (not just "B.Tech CSE student").
- Projects: 2 or 3, each with the problem, what you built, tools used and a link or screenshot.
- Skills: grouped and honest. Skip fake "90% Python" bars.
- About: a short story of why you build.
- Contact: email and LinkedIn/GitHub links.
Don't have projects yet? Your first project can be this website plus a site for a family business (here's how).
Build it in one evening
- Open the free website tool and choose Student / portfolio.
- Fill in your details. Paste your projects one per line.
- Copy the prompt into Claude. Ask it to explain each section of the code it writes, and actually read the explanation. That's how you learn.
- Check it on your phone. Fix anything that's untrue or unclear.
Publish it free (or with your own name)
- Free: GitHub Pages or Netlify give you a free address. GitHub Pages also shows recruiters you can use GitHub.
- Your own name: a
yourname.indomain and basic hosting look professional. Compare prices first; you don't need anything expensive for a one-page site.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying a template and changing only the name. Recruiters notice.
- Listing every tool you've ever opened. List what you can actually use.
- Contact forms that don't work. A simple email link is better.
- Never updating it. Add each new project the week you finish it.
