At 12, Elon Musk wrote a space game called Blastar and sold it for $500
Elon Musk taught himself programming and, at 12, sold the code of his game Blastar to a magazine for $500. Here's what students can learn from it.
Most people know Elon Musk for electric cars and rockets. Fewer know that his first sale was a video game he wrote as a 12-year-old in South Africa.
Blastar
Musk taught himself programming on a home computer. At 12, he wrote Blastar, a simple space-shooter game, and sold its code to a computer magazine, PC and Office Technology, for about $500. The magazine printed the code so readers could type it in and play.
Think about that for a second. A 12-year-old:
- learned on his own,
- finished a complete project (not just started one),
- and found someone who would pay for it.
Finishing is the real skill
Most students have ten half-built projects. Very few have one finished, public project. Blastar was small, but it was done, and that's why it could be sold.
When you build, keep shrinking the plan until you can finish it in a weekend:
- Not "an app for all colleges", but "a bus-timing page for my college".
- Not "an online store", but "a one-page site for my aunt's pickles with a WhatsApp order button".
Finished and small beats huge and imaginary.
Somebody has to want it
Blastar sold because the magazine had readers who wanted new programs to type in. Before you build, ask: who will use this, and how will I reach them?
For a student in India in 2026, the easiest "buyers" are close by:
- A family business (your first website project)
- Your college (clubs, events, departments)
- Local shops and services in your town
None of them need you to be a genius. They need you to show up with something finished.
From one game to a company
Blastar didn't make Musk rich. What it did was prove to him that he could build something and that someone would value it. That belief is the real first product.
